【Titile】: Parental Migration and Left-behind Children's Education: Large-sample Evidence from Rural China
【Abstract】: This article explores the relation between parental rural-to-urban migration and the education attainment of rural children, using a 10% sample of the 2010 Population Census data for Chongqing, a province with the highest share of rural left-behind children in China. Taking advantage of new features of the 2010 census where migrants are traceable in their home regions, we manage to define migration in a more precise way. Based on linear regressions, we find that parental migration is associated with higher enrollments in junior and senior middle school, but with smaller chances of graduating from junior middle school. Supportive evidence shows that the positive correlations between parental migration and enrollments are mainly attributed to higher income earned by migrant parents, while lack of child care may be responsible for the lower completion rate of junior middle education. We handle the endogeneity of parental migration by using the Inverse-probability-weighted Regression Adjustment (IPWRA), a method assuming conditional unconfoundedness. Corrected results remain consistent with those from linear regressions.
